My musical musings continue. I began listing my favorite duets. And then decided to rank them..It was a daunting task of elimination and heartbreak. Much thought and effort went to it. I made list after list, weighing several factors such as composer, singers, my memory associations, all this while running on the treadmill. Several sheets in my pocketbook were devoted to this task. And I came up with a list.

Dandilsa’s top ten favorite TFM duets :

1.Anjali Anjali – Duet :

Chithra’s voice, the opening keyboard sequence, lyrics all make it one song i’ll never skip on my playlist!

2. Idhazhil Kathai- Unnal Mudiyum Thambhi :

I love the raagam Lalitha. A beautiful song, amazing singing and a fantastic movie to top it! The lyrics in this song are fantastic and refreshingly different. I never payed much attention to it, until Ani pointed it out to me once. When the hero compares the heroine’s face to the moon, she retorts saying the moon wanes day after day, who ever comapres it to a girl’s face! I love the un-romantic no-nonsense tone of the heroine.

3. Idhu Yenna Maayam – Oram Po :

This is the newest song on my list. A floating melody. It always manages to buoy me. It is really a special song.

4. Udhaya Udhaya – Udhaya

For the lovely violin interludes, and the “Kaadhalllllllll” sangathi :)

5.Anbe Sugama – Paarthale Paravasam

For Srinivas’s voice, the lovely Sahana violin pieces and the cute lyrics.

6. Swasame – Tenali

For Kamal’s head nodding, Jyothika’s pink skirt, SPB’s awesome voice and the highly scientific lyrics (nilavu illada budhan graham etc).

7. Suttum Vizhi – Ghajini

Amazing beats. Sriram Parthasarathy and Bombay Jaisree..what a combination! I always associate it with my first winter in the US. The hope, anxiety, melancholy ..It’s a weird mixture..I know!

8. Thendral Vanthu Yennai Thodum – Thendrale Yennai thodu

Beautiful agmark IR. Very fresh.. Reminds me of monsoon in Chennai..”Ninaintha piragu nanam yedharku..” and the magic of KJ Yesudas!

9. Ding Dong Kovil Mani – Ji

The melody, amazing veena interlude (learnt very recently that it is in Rasikapriya and played by Rajesh Vaidhya), the awesome chettiar houses in the video…

10. Thoongatha Vizhigal – Agni Nakshathiram

      Yenmel Vizhundha – May Madham

I couldn’t decide between the two..There’s a sentimental attachment to one and the comforting melody of the other!

Songs that almost made it (I wish I could do decimals :/) :

Sundari- Thalapathy

Thoda Thoda- Indra

Poovasam – Anbe Sivam

Uyirile – Vettaiyadu Vilayadu

Malargale – Love Birds

I feel like making this a tag..I want to pass it on to Ani, Aparna, Mahathi and BG. If you don’t feel like it, name a few in my comments space.. I am curious :)

Edited to add : I saw Ani’s list..And I was cursing myself for having forgotten Thee kuruvi!!!! It’s top spot now people..I didn’t remember it because it is such an un-conventional duet..But damn!

BG did it too..A very nice mix of old and new..I like the yennai pandhada song on her list a lot!

  • Hey good list. I am amazed that you remember!

  • songs that almost made it??!! lol lol..!!
nice ones though most of them were from “ur generation”!! *ehhahahaha*!

  • wow, such lovely collections and rare melodies to listen and cherish..

thanks for sharing those songs and made me ponder upon their lyrics..

    -Aiz.

  • Gumthalakkadigummu

My favorite duet is that Aati Kya Khandala song. Especially when Will Smith sings it.

PS I am liking Madisthan more and more. Are there no carnatic music duets?

  • @ Ani – I remember the exact sofa I was sitting on in Sri Vilas when this happened..What you thought???
@Madi- Y don’t you do this tag and educate us on songs of “your” generation..
    @Princess – Thanks!
@ Gummu – People without blogs shouldn’t diss others who do :D Btw interesting question..I donno..

  • Nice list. Interesting thing about Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, I came to know recently is, the raagam of that song is Lalitha and also Sita’s name in the movie is Lalitha.

I like all the songs in it. Especially Suddhadhanyasi discussion following punjai undu nenjai undu. A reliable source tells me the title song is also suddhadhanyasi, is it?

I never dissed your blog, I was only agreeing with the blogger named Madisthan that the songs you have picked as your favorite in this post called “Jodi Padalgal” are not “current”. It is but a harmless dig at your seemingly mature and dare I say it, refined, taste in music. Furthermore, I would like to remind you that I never had a blog. The point I am making is that even if I did have one, I would never have dissed your favourite songs which contain enjoyable fugues between the male and female vocalists ,refreshingly called a “duet” in the film industry. Once again, I intend no ill will and I shall go to the extent of apologizing to you for my perceived behaviour.

  • [...] 6, 2008 · No Comments BG tagged me to list my top 10 tamil film duets. Dandilsa started this nice [...]

  • @adithya – That is how I knew it was Lalitha and not Vasantha, because honestly I can’t tell the difference between the two…Many will argue that it is only “suddhadhanyasi scale” as apposed to the raaga itself as only the notes are the same and not the lakshana..I am no expert..So I just go by general opinion.
Gummu – Point taken..Please ignore my aforementioned comment. That was but an attempt to “dish it back” as we common folks are wont to say. But I see your point about how none was served in the first place..Much apologies.

  • Tony Bennett and Dolly Parton's love child.

It is an beautiful day and I want to give my list. This is Nirma Top 5. Co-sponsored by Fevikwik.

    1. Dil To Pagal Hain from Dil To Pagal Hain

    2. Kuch Kuch Hota Hain from Kuch Kuch Hota Hain

    3. Soldier,Soldier from Soldier

    4. Dhai Akshar Prem Ke from Dhai Akshar Prem Ke.

    5. Paper Tiger from Dry Kill Logic.

Thank you for your time. I am very impressed by your ability to discern the mode from hearing the song. Unfortunately, I can only tell if it is aeolian or mixolydian. They are the sad type of songs if played in minor key. I don’t like the phrygian mode because they sound too happy. Ok thank you.

  • Check out “Sangeetha swarangal” from azhagan, Naramugaye from Iruvar, Kodi asianthathum kaatru vanthatha (old)- dont remember the movie!!

  • Unc, I like both sangeetha swarangal and narumugaye..havent heard the other one..will look out!

  • By not replying to my comment, you have taught me a valuable lesson. My flippant attitude was in very poor taste and shows that people do not appreciate cynics which explains my lack of friends. I thank you Dandilsa. I shall not defile this space again.

  • Jus now remembered that I haven’t still done your tag at all! Will surely do it next year! ;)
